Raiders, Comets compete in 7-on-7 passing tournament

July 17, 2013 — The pads and helmets are out in full force now as teams are practicing for the upcoming 2013 high school football season.

Several teams from across central and Eastern Kentucky converged on Kentucky Christian University’s campus for a 7-on-7 passing tournament.

East Carter and West Carter both participated, along with Lewis County, Fleming County, George Rogers Clark, Fairview and Betsy Layne.

For the Comets, it gave coach Kevin Brown a good look at what freshman quarterback Braden Brown could do.

“I thought he did a good job in the first game getting nervous and a little rusty going out of the dead period,” Brown said. “He made good decisions and threw the ball well. I was very pleased with his performance.”

Raiders coach Zack Moore was able to work a few signal callers in the backfield, including junior Zack Cathey and Cole McClain.

“They were coachable but there is still work that needs to be done,” Moore said. “Mistakes were made but they weren’t making the same ones over and over and learned from them.”

In the games the Comets played at KCU, Brown was impressed with the way his team picked up the pace.

“Our overall team speed has improved a little bit and I thought the guys had a little more confidence and we picked up the pace,” Brown said.

Moore saw how his defense worked against several of the teams participating in the tournament. While he was eager to see his young kids in action, he expects his team to get better along with his quarterbacks.

“Nobody really pulled away,” Moore said. “He’s got the ball in the hand and everybody’s watching. Both of them made good throws, but they have to cut out mistakes. There is no room for improvisation.”

West will be a little younger this year and Brown said he likes the way his inexperienced players played on both sides of the ball.
