East, West release 2013 gridiron schedules

July 17, 2013 — Since we are on the topic of high school football, East and West Carter both released their football schedules recently.

Both the Raiders and Comets have put together challenging non-district schedules with their full slate of Class 3A District 6 contests.

The Raiders are coming off a 2-8 2012 season with a big win against Morgan County to end the season. Coach Zack Moore is eager to build off that in hopes of a successful 2013.

“The Morgan win was big for our mental psyche,” Moore said. “We just have to play within ourselves and if we do that we can be a good football team. That win should have been inspiring for the team.”

The Comets did not have the season they were hoping for in 2012, going 0-10, but lost just three games by a total of 14 points. Coach Kevin Brown has seen improvement from the offseason from his team.

“Our schedule has changed a little bit,” Brown said. “We replaced a few teams on last year’s schedule to help us compete. We just felt like we needed to make a change there.”

The Raiders open up 2013 on Aug. 24 against Class 1A Power Raceland, which won nine games last season and also made it to the second round of the playoffs. It does not get any easier for East as they host Class 1A state runner-up Fairview in their home opener the following week.

“I think we’ve got one of the toughest schedules in the region,” Moore said. “We filled it with regional teams, we don’t go across the river into Ohio. And it can be challenging especially for a team trying to get back on our feet. We don’t back down, we just do the best that we can.”

West will have one more week off before opening their season on Aug. 30 at Bath County. The Comets will have three of their next four games at home with Nicholas County on Sept. 6 and Morgan County the following week. They will travel to Greenup County before closing out September at home against Russell.
