July 2, 2014 — Just about everything went right for the 11-12-year-old Morehead All-Stars in their opening round game of the Area 1 tournament.
Andrew Hankinson, Nick Eastham and Devin Davidson each hit home runs, all in the fourth inning in part of an 18-hit day as Morehead defeated Grayson 14-0 on Friday at Morehead City Park. In addition, starter Corey Binion pitched a complete game no-hitter in the victory.
“Our hitting all year long with these kids has been really good,” Manager Toby Gardner said. “We’ve always been one to get to the park early and take batting practice before every game and it’s nice to see our hard work pay off like that.”
Morehead had the lead at 1-0 heading into the fourth inning before the offensive outburst took place. Binion led off with a double and later scored on a wild pitch. Hankinson would deposit his roundtripper to right-center field to take a 3-0 lead. A few batters later, Davidson pulled his ball over the right field fence. After a Preston Adkins single, Eastham used his power to hit a two-run opposite field home run to put the game away.
“It was a manageable game up until that fourth inning,” Grayson Manager Brian Scott said. “We gave them a few runs and got knocked down a little bit and we just couldn’t recover.”
“Our kids were a little nervous in the first few innings and that kind of showed but we settled down,” Gardner said. “If you look at our lineup, most consider us to have speed and power. Batters 1-12 can hit them out. We’ve seen them do it on a daily basis in practice.”
The All-Stars took a 9-0 lead in the fourth frame on singles by Bradley Gardner, Hankinson and Gavyn Gasparac.
Binion would have no trouble keeping the Grayson offense off-balance. He gave up one walk to the first batter he saw and then retired 15 straight, 11 of them by strikeouts.
