March 26, 2014 — Teams all across the 16th Region have toed the rubber to begin the baseball and softball seasons.

Some teams have impressed early, getting very good wins to enjoy early season success. So without any further adieu, here are the inaugural polls for the Bates Crazy 8:

Baseball:

1. Boyd County

2. Lewis County

3. Rowan County

4. Greenup County

5. East Carter

6. Ashland

7. West Carter

8. Elliott County

As exciting as the baseball season was last season that saw Ashland win the 16th Region, there is a chance this could be a wide open season for any team to win it this year.

Boyd County has one of the most talented teams they have had in several seasons. Lewis County touts one of the best players in the region in Sammy Holder.

Rowan County, which is 20-4 in their last 24 games dating to last season, is a legitimate contender for a crown. We're just one full week into the regular season and it looks to be an outstanding year of baseball in the 16th Region.

Softball

1. East Carter

2. Greenup County

3. Ashland

4. Boyd County

5. Raceland

6. Rowan County

7. Fairview

8. Russell

Having only two games of softball under my belt this season, gauging the 16th Region in softball looks to be harder than putting a 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle together in a short amount of time.

It's hard to pick against Ashland, who has won multiple 16th Region titles the past few seasons but if there is a year where other teams can knock off this Kittens, this could be it.

Will it be Rowan County, who already has six wins on the season? Or can East Carter's talent finally prevail and put together another solid season to make it to Owensboro? It's early, I know.
