It did not take long for the West Carter softball team to advance to its fifth straight 62nd District Championship.
The Lady Comets, who have won four straight district crowns, took their first step towards another on Monday with a 19-1 victory over Elliott County in three innings.
Elliott would surprise West Carter scoring a quick run at the beginning of the game but the Lady Comets would then score 19 runs in the second inning to put the Lady Lions away.
“Their pitcher struggled a little in the second inning,” Manager Greg Reynolds said. “She walked some got a few hits and went all us that way.”
Reynolds said his team showed a lot of patience at the plate on Monday, something his team has not done a whole lot of this season.
“We waited for our pitch,” Reynolds said. “We’ve been working on that trying to get more patient. If it’s not your pitch, just wait for it and we did a really good job of that. When we do that, we have success.”
West Carter (12-12) squared off with East Carter for the third time this season in the 62nd District Championship game Tuesday night (after press time.) The two split their regular season meetings.
“We’re going for it again,” Reynolds said. “The girls are pumped up, ready to go, and of course it’s going to be a tough game. East has improved and they’re hungry. They’ve seen us win four straight and they want a shot at that title.”
Both games were decided by errors that lead to runs scoring and Reynolds believes this game should be no different.
Errors could play a factor in it,” Reynolds said. “If we hit the ball, they’ll make errors and vice-versa. It will come down to who wants it the most.”
Both East and West advanced to the 16th Region tournament, which will be played at East Carter next week.
