James, East mercy Sheldon Clark

May 1, 2013 — The East Carter baseball team is showing signs of life, winning five out of its past six games, including a 10-0 shutout of Sheldon Clark on Friday.

The Raiders (12-11) put together a solid offensive performance against the Cardinals (4-20), including Jesse James who had three RBIs in the contest.

“He has hit the ball well all season,” Manager Jeremiah Shearer said. “He hit line drives and hit it hard. He’s been consistent all year long.”

In addition to James’ play, senior Cole Boggs legged out two triples and had an RBI.

“We talked about setting the tone early,” Shearer said. “We got up six on the first and never looked back.”

Another positive was the return of Chandler Duncan who made his first start of the season. He pitched a few innings and picked up the win.

“He attacked the zone and didn’t give up a hit and threw strikes and I really was happy to see that,” Shearer said.

Chandler Adams and Cole Boggs each had time on the mound as well to keep their arms fresh for the final stretch of the regular season.

Derek Keller and Austin Wells each had two RBIs in the win.

With May beginning, Shearer said his team is starting to put all phases of the game together to make a run in the postseason.

“It’s starting to come together defensively,” Shearer said. “We’ve had some solid defense these past few games and now we’re trying to make all the right plays before we get in the district tournament.

“We’re finishing strong to get that No. 1 seed,” Shearer said. “We have to continue pitching the ball well and defense and the games will take care of themselves.”

East Carter hosted West Carter on Tuesday. They will finish 62nd District play on Wednesday when they travel to Morgan County.
