Bath bats too hot for West

May 1, 2013 — The West Carter baseball team committed seven errors and gave up nine runs in the last two innings against Bath County as the Wildcats defeated the Comets 12-2 in five frames.

When both teams shook hands and returned to their respective dugouts, manager Brian Brown paced the floor, upset with the way his team played against one of the top four teams in the 16th Region.

Brown felt like the game got away from his young ball club after being down 3-2 in the fourth inning.

It did,” Brown said. “Chris (Johnson) pitched a good game but our defense didn’t help him at all. We just made poor decisions and had a lack of effort.”

Johnson pitched all five innings, giving up three runs on eight hits with two walks and one strikeout. The remaining nine runs were unearned due to the errors.

“There was a few balls in there that I’d like to have back but I think I pitched pretty well,” Johnson said. “We had too many errors.”

“He did a great job,” Brown said. “He put the ball over the plate in the strike zone and made them hit it and for the most part we had chances to make plays. We just didn’t do that.”

What leaves Brown scratching his head is the fact that his team has played much better in the field.

“We kind of had a handle on that in the past couple of weeks,” Brown said. “We’ve been playing much better defense. Obviously (Monday), we did not play very well in the field.”

The Comets (6-9) struck first in the top of the second on a Trey Greenhill single to center that scored Zach Walker. Bath County took a 3-1 lead in the bottom frame.

In the fourth inning, sophomore outfielder Chase Hanshaw’s single to left scored Ben Jordan to make it a 3-2 game.
