The East Carter Lady Raiders started off Christmas break the right way defeating the defending 15th Region Champion Magoffin County Lady Hornets 49-42 in the first round of the Republic Bank Classic at Lexington Catholic High School.
After racing out to 13-12 Magoffin lead after the first quarter, the defensive pressure turned up for East allowing just 10 points or less in each of the next three periods to gain the victory.
East coach Hager Easterling is very proud of the way his team battled.
“We had to gut it out in a typical December game,” Easterling said. “We have to grow into some things. It's a process, but I think we will get a whole lot better.”
The Lady Raiders (5-1) were paced by sophomore Megan Stickler’s 19 points, including all but two points in the first quarter. Eighth grade sensation Kristen Mayo chipped in with 13 points while junior Bryana Greenhill had seven. Senior Kerie Steele provided the Windex for the glass, cleaning up seven rebounds.
In the fourth quarter, Stickler put East ahead for good, connecting on a three-point field goal to give the Lady Raiders at 42-40. From there, they hit five free throws to ice the game.
“We did a lot of good things down the stretch but we know we have to build off of these December games to get us ready for the stretch run at the beginning of the year,” Easterling said.
The Lady Raiders finished up play in the Republic Bank Classic last weekend. They will now head to Greenup County to take part in the Ohio River Cities Classic after Christmas. The Journal-Times will have a recap in next week’s edition.
