East, West to move football classes in proposed realignment

April 15, 2014 —  East and West Carter could be moving out of Class 3A District 6.

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s Board of Control approved a draft of realignment for football on Tuesday.

Under the new proposed realignment, East Carter would move up to Class 4A and play in District 8 with Ashland, Boyd County, Greenup County, Johnson Central and Rowan County. West Carter would potentially move down to Class 2A and play in District 6 with Bath County, Holy Cross (Covington), Lloyd Memorial, Newport and Newport Central Catholic.

From the KHSAA release: The Board approved a draft of the football alignment for the 2015-18 seasons, which was configured after member schools were given the opportunity to declare their desire to “play up” in classification. The draft alignment will be presented to the membership and feedback will be sought through a survey, which will then be presented to the Board of Control during its next scheduled meeting on May 12. Schools are not permitted to sign game contracts for the 2015-18 seasons until the football alignment is finalized, which is expected to take place during the May meeting.

Comets Coach Kevin Brown expressed concern for his program after the Board of Control revealed their new potential district.

“We’re not too happy with it,” Brown said. “"I thought they’d send us to the Eastern part of the state rather than the Northern Part. We’d make at least two trips to Northern Kentucky a year.”

“Financially, it’d be impossible for us to survive in a four-year period."

Brown said his petition to move up in to Class 3A, specifically the proposed fifth District (Russell, Pendleton County, Fleming County and Lewis County) is ready to send to KHSAA.

Raiders Coach Zack Moore had a feeling that his program would be moving up to Class 4A.
