June 26, 2013 — After almost three decades, the East and West Carter gyms are getting a much-needed facelift.
Deconstruction has already begun at West Carter to remove its floor and East Carter has already been taken up in preparation for brand new hardwood. Both projects are expected to be finished before the school year begins.
“There are a lot of things that go on in this gym, it is almost like a civic center,” Raiders Coach Brandon Baker said. “It will be a nice touch to have a facility that can house any event it might need for our area.”
“It is very exciting to get a new floor and bleachers,” Comets Coach Jeremy Webb added. “It will be nice to have something new to play on. The floor has been down for 30 years and now it’s time to upgrade.”
The floors have seen a lot of play. The volleyball teams, both boys and girls basketball teams, as well as baseball and softball use the Harold D. Holbrook Athletic Complexes and the wear and tear was evident.
The $682,900 renovations will feature all new hardwood and lower arena bleachers at both facilities. When the final results are in place, both Webb and Baker believe they could have some of the nicest facilities in the region.
“They started some upgrades to our gym last year adding new bleachers in the upper arena and hopefully this will help complete the renovation,” Webb said.
“It’s something we’ve really needed and both our courts are in pretty bad shape but the end result is going to be really nice and it is something our school and community will be very proud of,” Baker said.
While both schools are getting new floors, both expect to maintain the history both gyms have.
“There’s been a lot of good players, teams and games played on that court,” Baker said. “We all want to keep the memories arrive. It’s going to be different but it’s going to be an upgrade for our school.”
“People who have been around our basketball program are sad to see it go but we’re moving forward,” Webb said. “The girls program has been very successful and so has the boys. But we’re excited for the future.”
