Ashland quiets Comets

April 24, 2013 — The Ashland Tomcats won the 16th Region last year in dominating fashion, going 16-4 in the region last year.

They showed why they could be the favorite once again Monday night in Olive Hill as Ashland scored in the first five innings to down West Carter 11-2 to begin a five-game home stand. West (4-6) had won three of four games heading into Monday’s game.

“Ashland is a very good team,” manager Brian Brown said. “We knew it'd be a challenge to beat them.”

After giving up 10 runs in the first five innings, the Comets got on the board in the bottom frame on a Peyton Brown fielders choice that allowed Zack Walker to score. In the bottom of the sixth, JT Johnson’s base hit RBI scored Tanner Tackett.

“We hung in there,” Brown said. “We got on base with some walks. We didn’t strike out very much, we just couldn’t push more runners across.”

Walker and Matthew Patrick had the other two hits for West Carter.

Cameron Fritz was 2-for-2 with the RBI for the Tomcats (10-7). Aaron Elam finished 2-for-3, with one RBI.

“Our fielding was good and we only committed one error,” Brown said. “We’ve played good solid defense and that's something we have improved on,” Brown said. “We’re going down the stretch playing solid defense and if we can put the ball in play that's all we can ask for.”

Ashland starter Evan Cox was efficient, pitching four innings for the win while allowing only two hits. Austin Kelley worked the final three innings.

“He really pounded the strike zone,” Brown said. “We were fortunate to get four hits but every time we seem to put the ball in play, it was right to someone.”

West Carter looked to bounce back Tuesday night when they hosted Rowan County. The Comets will play Elliott County on Thursday in 62nd District action.
