West softball earns split in Boyd County Spring Classic

May 1, 2013 — The West Carter softball team participated in the Boyd County Spring Classic this past weekend, picking up one win and one loss.

The Lady Comets defeated 15th Region power Lawrence County 7-1 and fell to St. Albans, W.Va. by the same score.

“I felt like we really played well,” said Greg Reynolds, West manager. “We hit the ball very well in both games so getting a split in a field of such good competition is a good deal for us.”

Against Lawrence County, Leatha Reynolds continued her tear at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a homerun and two RBI. Alyssa Shelton went 1-for-4 with two RBI, Amber Thornsberry and Courtney Reynolds had a hit and an RBI. Makaela Buckler also had an RBI.

“It was a signature win and it was one we really needed to get some confidence going,” Reynolds said. “Now that we’re hitting the ball really well, we need to get on a roll.”

West Carter was a little shorthanded this past weekend with a few players gone because of a senior trip. Against St. Albans, West gave up six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning due to some errors.

“To have a couple of seniors gone for the past few games I thought we played really well,” Reynolds said. “We had some girls playing that didn’t have a lot of varsity experience that made some steps in the right direction. We suffered a little bit and they were nervous but on Saturday they came out of that and showed us what the future is going to be like.”

Leatha Reynolds had the only RBI of the game in the seventh inning on a double that scored Courtney Reynolds.

“We faced a team that we don’t know a lot about and you’re trying to feel your way through them, but we got through it,” Reynolds said.

West Carter suffered a 7-1 setback Monday night against Raceland. They played Boyd County on Tuesday night in Olive Hill and will face Ashland on Wednesday. The Lady Comets will play East Carter Friday to determine the No. 1 seed in the 62nd District tournament.
