West volleyball goes 1-3 in Berea Tournament

Aug. 28, 2013 — The West Carter volleyball team made the long trip from Olive Hill to Berea this past weekend to take part in the Lady Pirates' Tournament.

The Lady Comets went 1-3 in the all-day event, defeating the host Berea 2-0 (25-14, 25-19) but falling to Madison Southern 0-2 (25-19-25-15), Mercer County (25-8, 25-10) and Knott County Central (25-17, 25-19).

Coach Beverly Barker was happy to get a win in the tournament but was hoping to have a better performance.

“We didn’t play to our potential we started out serving terribly in the first and second match and when you’re not serving well, we can’t put ourselves in position to win,” Barker said.

Things got better in the second half of the day but could not establish any rhythm to get past some of the top teams in the tournament.

“In the long run it’s going to make them better,” Barker said. “It was a long day playing four matches down there. You have to have a lot of (stamina) and it is tough.”

It also marked the first time having setter Savannah Zeigler in the lineup too, which Barker admitted, was a big help.

“She had been out and returned to the team and she played really well,” Barker said. “She can get the ball up high for our hitters to attack the ball.”

The Lady Comets are still hoping to put things together after the first week to play better as the season goes along.

“They haven’t learned how to close out games,” Barker said. “They don’t talk on the court and they tend to (relax) a little on the court. We have to be sharp in playing every time we’re out on the court.”

West Carter returned to the court Tuesday night (after press time) at Rose Hill. They will play Fairview on the road Thursday.
