Nov. 13, 2013 — While the East and West Carter football teams did not make the playoffs this season, both teams were well represented on this year’s Eastern Kentucky Conference all-conference teams.
At a luncheon on Monday afternoon at Carter Caves State Resort Park, the select Comets and Raiders one-by-one accepted their trophies and stood with their coaches for photo opportunities.
East’s Qua Davis, Peyton Wilburn, Jordan Ratcliff and Jacob Gray made the all-conference team from the Raiders. Kicker Evan Huddle was named Co-Special Teams Player of the Year with Paintsville’s Brad Nordin.
“It was good for our guys to get some credit at the end of the year and be recognized for their performance on the field,” East head coach Zack Moore said. “Being in the EKC offers them the opportunity to acknowledge the kids in our school have put in a little bit more work. I’m proud of these guys.”
West’s Braden Brown and Austin Travis also were selected to the EKC all-conference team. Comet senior Dallen Dean was presented with the Wes Hopkins Courage Award.
“These kids are very deserving,” Comets head coach Kevin Brown said. “They’ve worked extremely hard and it lets them know that it’s paying off. They are helping to change and help us improve the program. It’s a big honor for them and our football program.”
Brown said Dean is one of 10 siblings and works between 30 and 35 hours a week to help his family, including going to school and football events.
West Carter athletic director Brian Brown was named the Leland “Tiny” Roberts Assistant Coach of the Year.
Raceland and Lewis County were crowned co-champions of the EKC as both teams finished the season undefeated against conference opponents — Raceland was 4-0, while Lewis County went 6-0. Paintsville finished runner-up.
