Lady Comets get win on Senior Night

Oct. 16, 2013 — The West Carter girls soccer team gave its seniors one last fond memory this past Thursday in Olive Hill.

With the emotions of saying goodbye to Tesla Henderson, Gabby Bond and Haley Gonzalez, the Lady Comets used a strong attack by their veterans and solid defense to earn a 2-0 win over Bath County in their regular season finale.

Gonzalez and Henderson both scored the goals and Bond pitched the shutout in the win. Coach Sandra Brown could not have been happier for her senior leaders.

I was glad they had a good way to wrap up their careers,” Brown said. “We had more shooters than scoring but cannot be more thrilled to see Haley and Tesla get the goals.”

“Shutouts are always good and Gabby played well back there,” Brown added. “Our defense played great and some of the scores throughout are season have been a lot closer since the beginning of the year. Gabby’s had a great career for us.”

West Carter won six of their last ten matches heading in to the 62nd District tournament.

“We have became more of a team as the season went on,” Brown said. “We’ve got an active midfield and we’re playing better soccer.”

This has been one of, if not the best season West Carter girl’s soccer has ever had. At 11-6-2, the Lady Comets are hoping that success carries over in to the postseason.

“This is a big confidence booster,” Brown said. “We’re glad to be finishing our season on a strong note. We’re maintaining numbers and building our program up.

The records all reset to 0-0 now as West Carter played Greenup County in the 62nd District Tournament Tuesday night on the road. The Lady Comets defeated the Lady Musketeers 3-2 back on Sept. 10 at Greenup County.

“We know Greenup is a good team and we have to come out and play the way I know we are capable to come away with a win and extend our season a little longer.”
