Raiders advance to 62nd District Championship

Oct. 16, 2013 — The East Carter boys soccer team will play for their second straight 62nd District Championship Wednesday after defeating Elliott County 10-1 at Greenup County Monday night.

The Raiders (10-2-4) used a strong attack by their team, scoring seven goals in the first half. But Elliott (1-9) surprised the raiders after Shadow Ray scored the first goal of the game in the first few minutes of the first half.

“We were still sleeping the first few minutes and took it too easy and he made a great play to get the first goal and it really opened our eyes,” Coach Billy Kemper said. “But we came together and started playing better.”

The Raiders were paced by Ryan Walker’s four goals. Seth Marsh and had two goals while Tristan Hall, Bradley Marsh, Jason Fields and Rob Yates each had one goal. Seth chipped in with two assists while Ryker Riffe, Dustin Sexton, Evan Huddle and Shawn Brown each has one.

“They really took it to them and I’m proud of my guys,” Kemper said.

While Elliott’s defense did not give East Carter any trouble, Kemper said his team must put 90 minutes together the rest of they way if they want to reach their goal of a Regional Championship.

“I learned that we have to take things seriously,” Kemper said. “We can’t count any team out. We have to go with the right attitude and focus in the game and then everything plays out. If we don’t we find ourselves in trouble like we did early in the game.”

“The pressure they brought in wasn’t the type of pressure we will see next week in the regional tournament but we just have to focus on us and see where we put ourselves,” Kemper added. “We want to look at the bigger picture and that is in the regional tournament.”

East Carter awaits the winner of the West Carter vs. Greenup County game in the 62nd District Championship that will be played tonight, weather pending.
