Sept. 25, 2013 —
The East Carter girls soccer team traveled to Sandy Hook Monday night to face off with Elliott County in 62nd District action. The Lady Raiders scored all of their goals in the first half to defeat the Lady Lions 12-0.
Sarah Bailey, Emily Hicks, Asheligh McDowell and Megan Stickler each had two goals for East. Macy Dyer, Emilee McDowell, Kallie Moore and Alex Sturgill each had one goal. Dyer and Moore also had two assists while Bailey Madison Dyer, Hicks, Emilee McDowell and Stickler had one assist.
“They played well,” Coach Ryan Knipp said. “We’re finally not in a mode to wait to come out and wait 20-25 minutes to start playing. We’re starting to come out in the beginning and put the game away early.”
Knipp substituted a lot throughout the game, which he said helps his depth for the rest of the season.
“That’s kind of the way these past couple of games,” Knipp said. “We’ve been able to sub out my starters and let my reserves play to get some experience for next year.”
East Carter (10-2-1) has scored 91 goals in 13 games this season and only given up seven. They lead the state in scoring offense and are in the top five in scoring defense. They also lead the state in margin of victories at 6.4 goals a game.
“We knew we were going to score a lot of goals but not a lot expected us to be playing this well on defense,” Knipp said. “(Goalkeeper) Starr Caldwell is a part of that because she has a lot of big saves but give our defense credit. If you take away three plays all year we could have given up less than that.”
The Lady Raiders have big matchups this week. They finished a game with West Carter that was called due to darkness and played another game with the Lady Comets Tuesday night. Thursday night is one the Lady Raiders have circled on their calendar since last season. They will travel to Ashland for a rematch of last year’s 16th Region Championship.
