The night the lights went out in Grayson

Electric fire postpones East Carter vs. Bath County game; Raiders win 38-21 on Sunday

Sept. 18, 2013 — Zack Moore had not seen anything quite like it in his 14 years in coaching.

Friday was supposed to be a day the Raiders would remember. It was JFL night with many of the future Raider football players supposed to watch East Carter win its first game of the year.

Instead, fans went home early after an electric fire cut power to all of Raider stadium midway through the first quarter.

“I knew where it was coming from,” Moore said. “Things were a little shaky and we are fortunate and happy no one was hurt.”

After some scrambling and talking, officials decided to resume the game on Sunday at East Carter with the Raiders leading Bath County 7-6.

“We didn’t do anything with the team on Saturday and we had the bye week previously so we had plenty of the work,” Moore said. “It was more important for guys to go and relax and enjoy their Saturday.”

And on Sunday, that is when the Raiders went to work.

Senior quarterback Cole McClain accounted for three touchdowns to give East their first win of 2013 over Bath County 38-21.

“Cole played really well,” Moore said. “The long runs are nice to have but the ones I appreciate the most as a coach when he stops for two and battles for three or four more. He had a lot of yards after contact which I was happy to see.”

McClain ran for 94 yards on 15 carries and scored twice on the ground. The senior was also 5-of-8 for 52 yards and a touchdown.

“We’ve worked hard and it showed,” Moore said. “With it being early in the year, September is different from a few years past. The longer you don’t win the tougher the pressure you put on yourself.”

East Carter would take control toward the end of the first quarter; scoring 17 unanswered points lead 24-6 at halftime. Jordan Ratcliff had the game’s opening touchdown from 41-yards out and finished the game with 92 yards on 11 carries.
