In the first year of the Bart Stevens era at West Carter, the Lady Comets will play in the All “A” State Tournament.
The Lady Comets, who had the toughest road to win the title, did just that by defeating Elliott County 56-46 Thursday night at Raceland-Worthington High School.
“I’m so proud of these girls,” Stevens said. “We have come a long a way.”
The Lady Comets had to play back-to-back nights after defeating Bath County in the semifinals to play in the Championship game against the Lions. But Stevens said his players found that second wind to go out and win a Regional championship and play in the state tournament this week.
“It was like those girls were playing on just shoe leather they were so tired,” Stevens said. “But we came out here and we never gave up. We were so patient and we made free throws and had players step up and I can’t say enough for the effort that our team gave to get to this point.”
The Lady Comets were led in scoring by Lexie Berry’s 23 points, including 16 in the first half. Fellow senior Brooke Callihan had 17 points, 12 in the second half and Megan Centers scored 10. Bonita Easterling had three points, Mikayla Buckler had two points and Chelsea Zeigler had one point to round out the scoring for West Carter.
“They play with no fear,” Stevens said. “They step up and hit big shots. They try to shoot you out but we responded and played a great zone, they did a great job.”
Both Berry and Callihan were on the team that went to the state tournament in 2011 and are excited to head back there again.
“It is very exciting,” Callihan said. “I want to go down and play with everything we have and go home with the championship of the All A.”
“We have enough potential to go far up there and if we give it all we had like we did here (in the region), we can do it,” Berry said.
Berry said when her team was struggling a little, she needed to step up and knock down some big shots.
“I came out and gave all I had for this team,” Berry said. “Elliott has gotten a lot better since the last time we played and it was a hard game and I was excited to win this.” West Carter (7-10) will now play in the All “A” State Tournament Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m. against the winner against Frankfort. The tournament is being held at the Frankfort Convention Center.
“This is all about the team, it’s not about me,” Stevens said. “They’re very resilient. For them to win a regional championship ....It’s a great thing for this team and this school.”
Callihan was named the MVP of the tournament and named to the all-tournament team. Joining her was Centers, sophomores Lexie Berry and Brooke Adkins.
