Running the Point

Jan. 23, 2013 — When I first talked to Coach Bart Stevens to do the team preview for the Journal-Times, I could tell right away that his basketball IQ was very high. He knew the personnel of his team right off the top of his head. Their strengths. Their weaknesses.

His expectations were like any first year coach and that was to play hard and to the best of their abilities.

This past Thursday in the 16th Region All “A” Championship game against Elliott County, the Lady Comets proved him right by defeating the Lady Lions to advance to the state tournament in Frankfort.

Stevens has spent most of his life playing and studying the game of basketball and it is no surprise he developed a game plan for his team to get to this point.

Behind Brooke Callihan, Lexie Berry and the rest of the Lady Comets, Stevens will be the first to tell you that the credit goes to the kids. He has said to me on more than one occasion that he is not the easiest coach to play for, getting on to his kids for making mistakes during

games. But like any coach, there is a method to his madness.

His team does not have a flashy scorer, a top 20 state player. But what he does have is a team that enjoys playing the game of basketball together and each share a common goal: To be the best. They can do just that if they go to Frankfort and win four games in five days and win the All “A” State Championship, which would be the first state title West Carter has won since they won the Sweet 16 in 2000 under legendary coach John “Hop” Brown.

So kudos, to Coach Stevens for getting the most out of his kids and making history by taking your team to play for a state championship.

Now, go bring the trophy back to Olive Hill.
