Raiders upset by Bulldogs in Derby Classic

By MacKenzie Bates - Sports Editor

Dec. 26, 2012 —     Last Thursday afternoon in Raceland gymnasium, it was a tale of experience versus youth, and this time, youth won out.

A dramatic third quarter three at the buzzer helped signal a win for Lawrence County as they defeated East Carter, 71-63, in the first round of the Raceland Derby Classic.

This was a close one from the get go, as Lawrence County relied on its youth to challenge a senior laden East Carter squad.

Trailing 9-7 with under three to go in the first quarter, senior forward Jordan Burchett connected on a three to give East a 10-9 lead, before Connor Greene made it 12-9 with a steal and layup.

A three by senior guard Trenton Welsh made it 16-13 in favor of the Raiders, but a foul on a three-point attempt by Brandon Richardson at the buzzer helped to even the score when he drilled all three free throws.

Tied at 16 apiece, the second quarter was a matter of tug and pull.  A three-point basket by senior Quinn Huddle just around the 3 minute mark was the final points the Raiders would score in the quarter, while Lawrence went on a 6-0 run to end the period.

Lawrence County led East Carter 30-26 at the half.

Just when East appeared to be putting together its run at the end of the third, Lawerence County responded in a big way.

Two free throws by senior point guard Cole Brammer whittled the Bulldog lead to 44-43, but a desperation heave from just in front of the midcourt stripe by Lawrence County eighth grade guard Timmy Dalton played momentum changer.

Despite nine fourth-quarter points from senior forward Kyle Stewart, East Carter was never able to cut Lawrence’s lead under two during the fourth quarter, signaling its third loss of the season.

Stewart had a team-high 20 points, while Greene also made double figures with 11, Huddle and Brammer had eight and Burchett delivered seven.

Dalton was the game’s high scorer with 22 off the bench for Lawrence County.

Following the loss East Carter faced off against Clay County in the consolation bracket of the Derby Classic last Friday afternoon after press time.
