Baseball Comets ousted in All A

April 10, 2013 — The West Carter baseball Comets traveled to Raceland on Monday for the first round of the 16th Region All “A” Tournament.

However, the Rams emerged victorious over the Comets 9-5 to eliminate West from contention.

“Raceland got off to a good start against us,” Coach Brian Brown said. “They hit the ball well into the gaps and we were playing catch-up the whole game.”

The Rams used a pair of three run innings, one in the second and the other in the fourth, to lead 6-0 over West. Senior pitcher Zayne Hammons did the rest, pitching in to the seventh inning giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out five Comets.

“(Sammons) was really on,” Brown said. “We were never able to get anything early.”

The Comets started a rally in the fifth and sixth inning scoring an RBI in each of the frames. West scored three runs in the seventh before eventually falling by the four run margin.

“We’d get a hit or two, but were never able to get that decisive third or fourth hit to drive in runs,” Brown said. “We had nine hits but we were hitting ball right at people.”

Ben Jordan paced West (2-5) with 4-for-4 performance at the plate with an RBI. Peyton Brown went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Spencer Phillips drove in two runs while going 1-for-3 and Chase Hanshaw drove in the other run for the Comets.

“You can see improvement,” Brown said. “We’re cutting down on the errors and getting people on base. Now we just have to put it all together and drive in some runs.”

West Carter will return to action Thursday against Menifee County.
