Jan. 8, 2014 — East Carter was on the cusp of blowing away a highly regarded opponent in Glasgow on Saturday afternoon at the Ashland Kitten Shootout.

But the Lady Scotties made the Lady Raiders work for it, using a 23-5 second-half run to turn a 17-point East Carter lead into a one-point Glasgow edge.

Which was exactly what Lady Raiders Coach Hager Easterling wanted to see.

“You may not believe this, but I’m glad they got the lead because you want to see how your team responds in adversity,” Easterling said after his team prevailed 65-60. “When you’ve got a big lead like that and then the other team is making all their shots and you just can’t get them stopped and they get the lead, nine out of 10 teams fold and lose that ballgame.

“But hey, we showed ourselves, ‘We can keep our poise. We can respond back in the right way. We can come back and win that game.’ That’ll do us a lot of good.”

Trailing 58-57 with less than three minutes to go, the Lady Raiders closed the game on an 8-2 sprint.

Megan Stickler led East Carter (13-1) with 18 points. Kristen Mayo notched 15 and Bryana Greenhill pitched in 14.

Glasgow sophomore Breanna Glover totaled 24 points to lead all scorers. Lady Scotties Coach Justin Stinson said Glover has received offers from Kentucky, Western Kentucky and Dayton.

Emily Alexander and Allie Chapman each tallied 11 points for Glasgow (9-3), which made one field goal in the first quarter and trailed 31-10 on Stickler’s trey with 3:47 to go in the first half.

“We can make a lot of excuses why we were down 21, and at the end of the day, we just weren’t mentally tough and East Carter’s a very good basketball team,” Stinson said. “We’ve got to put ourselves in a better position prior to that. When you step off the bus, you got to put yourselves in a good position to be successful.”

Glasgow made that 23-5 run and forged ahead 58-57 on Shalika Smith’s follow shot. But Greenhill converted a transition putback,  Kelsey Stumbo scored in the paint, and after a Smith free throw with 1:13 to go, the Lady Raiders ran the clock down to 29.1 seconds before Haley Hall’s free throw.

Hall missed her second try, but the ball got through a scrum on the rebound out of bounds and stayed with the Lady Raiders, and Stickler converted two charity tosses.

She added one more with 16.2 ticks showing for the final count.
