Bates' Crazy 8

Jan. 1, 2014 — Boys

1. Ashland (8-2)

2. Fleming County (7-5)

3. Rowan County (7-4)

4. Elliott County (9-4)

5. Morgan County (8-3)

6. East Carter (6-6)

7. Lewis County (5-7)

8. Boyd County (3-7)

We have a new No. 1 team in the boys Crazy 8 this week. Over the holiday, the Ashland Tomcats have reeled off six wins in their last seven games, including the historic Ashland Invitational Championship.

The Tomcats are proving to everyone once again that they belong in the race for a 16th Region Championship.

One team catching my eye right now is East Carter. The Raiders are coming off a Derby Classic Championship and a strong run in the Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital Classic at Greenup County.

Coach Brandon Baker has his kids playing at a high level and they could be a team to be reckoned with at the turn of the New Year.

With 2014 arriving this week, these teams get back into their respective districts to battle it out over the next seven weeks.

1. East Carter (13-1)

2. Ashland (6-3)

3. Bath County (7-2)

4. Russell (9-4)

5. Fleming County (7-4)

6. Boyd County (5-2)

7. Lewis County (6-5)

8. Greenup County (5-5)

The No. 1 spot in the girls rankings will be on the line this week as top ranked East Carter, who won the Mr. Micro Computers Ohio River Classic hosts No. 2 Ashland. These two teams have been on a collision course as of late with both the Kittens and Lady Raiders playing at a high level. East demolished Russell 63-22 in the championship of the ORC last week and will look to keep that momentum going against the two-time defending 16th Region Champion.

I still like where the Bath County Lady Cats are at this point of the season. Granted, they went 1-2 in the Owensboro Health Orthopedics Holiday Classic (losing to Daviess County and Bowling Green). Those two squads are no slouches. With players like sophomore Sarah Price and Tayler Rogers, could the Lady Cats contend for a Regional Championship?

I hope everyone enjoyed 2013 because if 2014 is anything like this past year, we should be in for another fun ride.
