East Girls hold on vs. Lincoln County

Dec. 25, 2013 — The East Carter girls basketball team lost to the top ranked team in the state Elizabethtown 53-36 on Saturday in the Republic Bank Classic in Lexington for their first loss of the season.

On Sunday, the Lady Raiders rebounded against one of the 12th Region’s best teams, defeating Lincoln County 53-52.

“We started off too many turnovers in the first quarter and we finally started cutting them down and played a nice second quarter,” East Coach Hager Easterling said. “I give credit to my bench. They really sparked us in the second quarter and really helped us keep the lead in the second half.”

East led by as many as 14 in the third quarter and held an 11 point advantage going in to the final period.

That is when the Lady Patriots made their move. They knocked down a lot of shots in the final eight minutes and cut the lead to one in the final minute.

“They got hot and started hitting everything they threw up,” Easterling said. “They would hit a threes, runners in the lane, they got hot at the right time.”

In the final possession, Lincoln County had a chance to win it but to the Lady Raider’s credit, they were able to make four different stops to hold on for the win.

“They’re a really good team,” Easterling said. “I’m proud of my kids for being able to finish this ballgame and get a win. After they went on their run, a lot of teams could have folded. That’s the difference with these kids. They found a way to win.”

Kristen Mayo and Haley Hall led East Carter with 12 points each. Megan Stickler and Kelsey Stumbo each scored nine points in the victory.

In a game where they shot 2-for-22 in Saturday’s loss to E-Town, the Lady Raiders were more efficient from beyond the arc, hitting seven triples.
