Lady Comets drop contest to Greenup

Dec. 25, 2013 — The West Carter Lady Comets have been in games for the most part of the season. Their one problem has been their performance at the free throw line and it reared its ugly head once again.

West (2-5) shot 11-for-23 at the free throw line and fell short of a comeback, losing to Greenup County 60-57 this past Friday in Olive Hill.

Coach Bart Stevens said poor shooting at the line and some elementary like turnovers against The Lady Musketeers played a role in Friday’s contest.

“The biggest story was shooting the ball,” Stevens said. “We missed a lot of shots and we haven’t been a real good shooting team. We need to get better in those areas.”

West Carter led by three after the first quarter but a run by Greenup (4-3) gave them a 28-21 lead at the break. The lead ballooned in the second half to 11 before the Lady Comets attempted a comeback.

Morgan Berry, who was held scoreless in the first half, scored 16 points in the second half to help keep West Carter in the ballgame.

“Morgan Berry played a great second half,” Stevens said. “She really took the game over at a critical time. She has become a potent weapon for us because at times, Greenup didn’t have an answer for her.”

The Lady Comets had momentum midway through the final period after what Stevens believed was a foul on a Morgan Berry basket but the officials called a charge to turn the ball back over to Greenup County.

“That was the turning point in the game,” Stevens said. “It was the same situations as the Russell and Chesapeake games. We make free throws and we win the ballgame.”

Lexie Berry scored 15 points and Bonita Easterling came off the bench with 10. Brooke Adkins chipped in with five while Stacy Easterling and Leatha Reynolds each had four points. Lyla Evans rounded out the West scoring with three points.
