Bates' Crazy 8

By MacKenzie Bates - Sports Editor

Dec. 25, 2013 — Boys

1. Fleming County (6-3)

2. Ashland (5-2)

3. Rowan County (5-3)

4. Morgan County (6-2)

5. Elliott County (6-3)

6. Boyd County (3-6)

7. Lewis County (4-5)

8. East Carter (5-4)

There was not a very big shakeup in this week’s rankings.

While Lewis County has played a tough schedule thus far, the Lions are having a little bit of trouble finishing games.

They take a slide but I do not expect them to stay down very long.

East Carter makes a return to the Crazy 8 after reaching the finals of the Raceland Derby Classic. Fleming County, Ashland and Rowan County stay in the top three spots after a few out of Region games. Morgan jumps up to No. 4 after winning six out of their past seven games.

There are several big post Christmas tournaments that could provide a big impression on how they will ring in the new year.

1. East Carter (8-1)

2. Bath County (6-0)

3. Russell (7-2)

4. Boyd County (5-2)

5. Ashland (4-2)

6. Fleming County (6-2)

7. Lewis County (4-5)

8. Greenup County (4-3)

Despite losing their first game of the season East Carter holds onto the top spot in the girls rankings. They lost to the No. 1 team in the state, Elizabethtown 53-36 in the Republic Bank Classic in a game where the Lady Raiders shot 18 percent. They finished up play in Lexington on Monday.

Boyd County meanwhile earned a signature victory on Friday night when they knocked off rival Ashland 56-49.

The Lady Lions, suffered a big loss to Russell to start the year but have now rebounded nicely to maintain pace with the 16th Region.

Bath is the only undefeated team in the Region after defeating Burgin by 29 on Saturday.

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday this week. Enjoy the family time, food and of course, some holiday basketball!
