East Carter competes at state track championships

May 22, 2013 —     The East Carter boys and girls track teams made the long trek to Louisville this past week for the State Track and Field Championships and all who participated fared very well in their events.

The Raiders tandem of Alex Napier, Ben Napier, Brandon Neace and Dustin Sexton finished fourth in the state in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 8:19.47. East Carter’s team of Brandon Neace, Ben Napier, Alex Napier Kerrick Burchett placed 16th in the 4x400 meter Relay 3:37.29.

The girls’ track team also had a very good performance at the State Championships. Shayla Henderson placed eighth in the state in the Long Jump, earning a 16-01.75 jump and eighth in the high jump at 4-08.00. She also finished 23rd in the 200-meter dash.

Coach Carla Myers was very pleased with how Shayla performed in Louisville.

“She did very well,” Myers said. “She tied school record in high jump at five feet in the year. She’s really made a name for herself.”

Junior Macy Dyer was 15th in the 300m hurdles 51.77 seconds, 21st in the triple jump 28-11.50 and 14th in 100-meter hurdles 17.89 seconds.

“Considering Macy went for four events that was awesome,” Myers said. “She got more experience and next year she will do even better. Both jumping venues and the hurdles so I think she learned a whole lot and I expect her to do better next year.”

The boys also had other strong individual finishes. Dustin Sexton was 16th in the 300-meter hurdles 43.63 seconds, Ben Napier placed 13th in the 800m run 2:04.98 and Alex Napier 16th in the 800 meter run 2:05.45.

“They really represented the school very well,” Myers said. “I’m proud of our girls and next year we should have a really good team as well we have a strong team”
