Tackett, West defeat Morgan

April 17, 2013 — It was a full week between games for the West Carter baseball team.

But after Monday’s game against Morgan County, Tanner Tackett and the rest of the Comets felt like they could have played two games.

Tackett pitched a gem, going six innings, giving up one earned run on five hits while striking out six as West defeated the Cougars 3-2 in a 62nd District matchup.

“We got the outs when we needed to and limited their runs,” Tackett said. “I’m upset about the walks because that led to one of the runs.”

Kyle Stone and Ben Jordan each went 1-for-3 with an RBI in the contest to provide the scoring punch for West (3-5). JT Johnson scored on a throwing error to provide the margin of victory.

Manager Brian Brown said this was a game his team needed to win.

“Tanner came out from the first pitch to the last and did a great job of staying in control,” Brown said. “It was a big district game we needed to win.”

But it was Stone’s RBI base hit to right in the bottom of the fourth to give West the lead for good.

“We lost to (Morgan) earlier in the season so we kind of had payback on our mind,” Stone said. “We played good defense, and had a lot of good at bats. It feels good.”

Brown thought Tackett pitched well, often getting out of jams during big moments of the game.

Jordan would come out for the seventh inning, saving the game and the win for Tackett.

Spencer Phillips led the way for West at the plate, going 2-for-3, Chase Hanshaw ripped a double down the left field line for his only hit of the game, Zack Walker, Tackett and JT Johnson each had a hit.

Morgan’s Zach Bartley lead the way for the Cougars (9-3), going 3-for-3 with a double.

West Carter was on the road back in the 62nd District Tuesday facing Elliott County. The Comets will face Raceland on Friday in Olive Hill. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
