Olive Hill All-Stars fall to Raceland

By MacKenzie Bates - Sports Editor

June 26, 2013 — The Olive Hill 11-12-year-old softball All-Stars were ousted of the District 6, Area 1 tournament on Sunday, falling to Raceland 13-5.

The team, clad in orange and black, originally beat Olive Hill 26-6 in the first game of the tournament sending Olive Hill to the elimination bracket. After defeating Lewis County on Saturday, Olive Hill faced the same team again and coach Mike Greenhill said his team had a better showing against them.

“Raceland has been tough all year,” Greenhill said. “We just ran into a buzz saw with them.”

Raceland came out firing early, scoring three runs in the first inning off an error. Raceland’s pitching would do the same thing, not allowing a hit until Becca Nolen’s single in the top of the fifth inning.

Olive Hill was down to their last three outs with Raceland leading 10-0. But three walks, a hit batsman, an error and fielder’s choice would plate four runs to keep Olive Hill in the game.

“We did not really show up until the fourth inning but the girls played well and I’m proud of them,” Greenhill said.

Raceland would add two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 12-4. In the fifth after Nolen’s single to left, she took advantage of a wild pitch to score to cut Raceland’s lead back to seven.

“Our bats were quiet and that’s credit to Raceland’s pitching,” Greenhill said. “Getting the hit helped but we just need to string them together to help bring in some runs.”

Hanna Bear, Abby Jordan, Maddi Hanshaw, Jozi Greenhill, Riley Carter, Laryn Roe and Katie Burton reached base throughout the game.

Although they were eliminated from the tournament, there is a chance that this team could play again throughout the summer.

“We’re a young team but we’ll be back next year,” Greenhill said.
