West Carter boys soccer defeats Menifee County

Oct. 9, 2013 — The West Carter boys soccer team ended a six-game losing streak this past Wednesday when they defeated Menifee County 4-2 in Frenchburg.

Four different players scored for the Comets. Assistant Coach Troy Combs was happy to see his team played well, but knows they could have done more against the Wildcats.

“We did play well,” Combs said. “We got up two goals but I will say the scoreboard didn’t really show how the game went. We conceded two goals in a matter of minutes. We thought we were in control and they tied the game right up and we had a game on our hands.”

Freshman Garett Sparks earned his first goal of the year at the start of the game for the Comets. Cody James, Hunter Adams and Tyler Glover each scored for West Carter. Glover also had two assists and Troy Brickles had one assist.

“It’s good to know that we have our younger guys stepping up,” Combs said. “We can’t rely on two players to get us through the postseason.”

Combs said he made some changes after Menifee County tied the game up and there was still some confusion on the part of Combs to find the right lineup to escape with a victory.

“I made a change after the first two goals and we were putting a lot of pressure on them and they were still getting scoring chances,” Combs said. “We switched back to what we originally did and it helped us get the win.”

Combs said his team’s confidence is high and he said his team needs it going in to the 62nd District tournament next week.

“The late season push is crucial,” Combs said. “We can’t make mistakes we made earlier in the season. I expect to win.”
