West Carter holds on

Sept. 18, 2013 — Kevin Brown and the West Carter Comets can tell a change in the program after last week’s victory over Nicholas County.

The feeling in the air, the swagger the Comets walk with and now they can add a winning streak to the new set of changes.

Sophomore quarterback Braden Brown had 191 yards of total offense and had combined for three touchdowns as West Carter held on to a 30-25 victory over Morgan County. It is the first time since the 2010 season the Comets have won back-to-back games.

“It’s a huge deal because at this point of the season, we could be 3-0 (lost to Bath County in overtime in week one),” Coach Kevin Brown said. “We’ve started us another streak here and kids have to believe in what we’re telling them. These guys do that.”

Morgan County would come out firing after Kody Thornsberry ripped off a 24-yard run in just a few minutes into the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead. But West would take control on the ensuing kickoff as senior Dallen Dean returned an 82-yard kickoff for a touchdown. Austin Travis would score on a two-point conversion to put West on top 8-7.

“Our seniors are starting to come to the forefront,” Brown said. “They’re starting to be more vocal out on the field and that’s only going to help us when our seniors are leaders.”

Braden Brown would then give West a 15-7 lead on a 22-yard strike to Zach Walker for a touchdown. West would force 23 unanswered points after Brown ran in from five yards out to make it 23-7. Thornsberry, who helped the Cougars run for 250 yards. hit paydirt again from six yards out to bring Morgan 23-13 at the break.

“Morgan County is going to win a lot of ball games,” Brown said. “Defensively we had to stop the wedge which is why he had guys diving at their feet which it’s legal to do that. They were still able to make some huge plays. For the most part, we didn’t let (Thornsberry) rip off 60-75 yard runs and that’s a big deal.”
