West Girls soccer drops heartbreaker to Pikeville in All “A” State Sectional

Sept. 18, 2013 — The West Carter girls soccer team, fresh off the heels of winning their first ever 16th Region All “A” Classic soccer championship, needed one more win to earn a spot in next month’s state tournament in Elizabethtown.

The Lady Comets lost a heartbreaker to 15th Region Champion Pikeville 3-2 after the Lady Panthers scored two goals in less than five minutes to go in the second half.

“I was impressed with our play,” Coach Sandra Brown said. “We had excellent passing, the ball was on our side of the field for the most of the game. We just came up a bit short.”

Pikeville would lead 1-0 over West Carter before they got on the board when Kaylee Johnson put one in the back of the net to tie things up. With just minutes remaining, Johnson would give West a 2-1 lead putting the Lady Comets in great position to come away with a win.

But after a few questionable non-calls, Pikeville was able to regain the lead and ultimately took the lead to shut the door of a state tournament appearance for West Carter.

“We changed up a little bit and started to have the girls start more on the give and go,” Brown said. “We played a great defensive game, switched midfielders in and out. The game was ours all the way until the last two minutes.”

But this game helped West more than it hurt. To play with a team like Pikeville who year in and year out has a lot of success is something to be proud of, Brown said.

“Pikeville was very aggressive and had a lot of slide tackles it was exciting,” Brown said. “Once our girls got the goal and took the lead, their whole attitude changed. They were an unknown team to us and for us to come in play with Pikeville it’s very promising for us.”
