Shearer gets 200th career win

April 9, 2014 — East Carter head baseball coach Jeremiah Shearer said career win No. 200 kind of crept up on him. He was unaware that he was getting close to that milestone until his dad told him that he had finally reached that mark.

The Raiders defeated Middlesboro 12-2 in their only win during the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach. S.C. but it was a big one as Shearer reached the 200-win plateau.

“I’ve had several phone calls and texts over the past few days from former players who have congratulated me of getting to this point,” Shearer said. “It gets you thinking about the kids that you have coached and how successful we’ve been.”

Shearer has been the baseball coach at East Carter for ten years. In that span, he’s 200-110, winning nine of ten 62nd District Championships and the 16th Region Championship in 2009.

“We’ve been very blessed with a good run of baseball talent here at East Carter,” Shearer said. “It seems like we’re always in the mix with these kids.”

Against the Yellow Jackets, Shearer said to get a the milestone win over a tradition-rich program in Southeastern Kentucky made it that much more special.

“It was a game where we did everything right,” Shearer said. “We got a get pitching performance from Jordan Walburn and we know they’re a good program. To beat a program like Middlesboro and get that 200th win was pretty special.”

In a program where there have been only three coaches in school history, Shearer knows how important East Carter baseball is to the student-athletes and the Grayson community.

“We’ve been very successful on the field,” Shearer said. “That means a lot but one of the biggest is having 13 kids sign to play college baseball. They get an opportunity to get an education and continue to play the sport they love. That’s what it’s all about.”
