Bates' Crazy 8

By MacKenzie Bates - Sports Editor

April 9, 2014 — 1. Rowan County (7-0)

2. West Carter (7-1)

3. Ashland (5-2)

4. Lewis County (8-1)

5. East Carter (5-8)

6. Boyd County (4-9)

7. Greenup County (3-9)

8. Raceland (6-5)

I got my first glimpse of the top two teams in the Bates’ Crazy 8 last week when Rowan County defeated West Carter 11-4. While the Vikings picked up two district wins to move to 6-0 on the season, the Comets rebounded nicely with wins over Fairview and Allen Central. West Carter’s 7-1 start is the best in school history. They played the opening round of the 16th Region All “A” Classic Tuesday. If the Comets defeated Raceland, they would play in Thursday’s championship at Fairview.

Lewis County is on a five-game winning streak after dropping a contest to West Carter two weeks ago. They make a big jump this week to No. 4.

Congratulations goes out to East Carter coach Jeremiah Shearer for winning his 200th career victory last week during the Cal Ripken Experience tournament in South Carolina.

1. East Carter (11-3)

2. Ashland (6-1)

3. Raceland (5-3)

4. Greenup County (5-3)

5. Russell (7-4)

6. Boyd County (5-6)

7. Rowan County (7-4)

8. Fairview (5-4)

East Carter got the bats out at the right time during last weekend’s “Play it Again” Classic in Clarkesville, Tenn. The Lady Raiders finished second out of 42 teams, going 5-1 in the tournament. They scored 24 runs and had several players hit homeruns. Has the offense caught up to East’s pitching? We will find out later this week when they take on Lewis County.

Russell has not skipped a beat. The Lady Devils are 7-4 on the season and have wins over Fairview, Paintsville and Johnson Central to name a few.
