July 31, 2013 — West Carter’s softball program is looking for a new head coach.
Manager Greg Reynolds has resigned after five years as the head coach of the Lady Comets.
He was 82-83 in six seasons that including four straight 62nd District Championships and reached the 16th Region Tournament every season.
“I love that program and felt like the six years I was there I helped move the program forward,” Reynolds said. “I felt like this something I needed to do. I didn't want to leave a month for them to find someone. It might take a while so I didn't want to leave on bad terms.”
Reynolds is in the process of completing a degree and said he wants to focus completely on that.
“I’ve been in college and had several hours, 12 in fall and nine in the spring, and I am trying to finish it up,” Reynolds said. “I’ve got one class left and I had too much on my plate.”
The Lady Comets went 12-14 last season and almost completed an upset for the history books, nearly knocking off Ashland in this year’s 16th Region Tournament. Reynolds’ best season came in 2011 when West went 17-10, winning the district that year.
“I think to be honest I brought stability to the program,” Reynolds said. “Before I coached they were up and down and although we didn't have the best team, we were contenders every year.”
A search will begin soon to find Reynolds’ replacement.
“I’ve tried to talk him out of it,” Athletic Director Brian Brown said. “But I understand his decision to step down. Greg and Janena have done a great job as well as their coaching staff. It’s been one of the most stable programs we’ve had as far as success. We’ll really miss them and the girls will as well.”
Their daughter Leatha will be a senior this year and they will still be around to watch her play, but will be sitting in the stands watching cheering for her and the other girls in the program.
“I’ve watched all of those girls grow up and you grow attached to them and I did. It’s sad but you've got to do what's best for you,” Reynolds said.
