June 4, 2014 — The West Carter Comet track team, fresh off their runner-up finish in the Class 1A Region Seven meet, set their eyes on the state meet at the University of Kentucky on March 24.

In the boys 4x800m relay, the team of Hunter Adams, Dwight Parsons, Dalton Thornsberry and Austin Travis finished 20th with a time of 9:42.12.

The Comet group of Braden Brown, Ethan Brown, Ralph Wages and Shelton Kouns took part in the 4x200m relay, finishing ninth with a time of 1:35.72. The same group also ran the 4x100 relay, scoring a 12th place finish with a time of 46.49.

Austin Walker competed in the 110m hurdles and finished 12th with a time of 17.51.

Braden Brown competed in two individual events at the state meet. In the 200m dash, Brown finished eighth with a time of 23.32. In the 100m dash, Brown placed in a tie for 12th place with a score of 11.74.

In the 4x400 meter relay, West Carter’s group of Wages, Walker, Ethan Brown and Kouns finished 19th with a time of 3:52.32.

East Carter took part in the Class 2A meet just the day before at UK.

The Raiders team of Dustin Sexton, Kerrick Burchett, Joey Williams and Ben Napier placed fourth in the 4x800m relay with a time of 8:26.12, just nine seconds out of first place.

Sexton, who also competed in the 300m hurdles, placed seventh with a time of 40.94. Napier, who took part in the 800m run, also placed, finishing sixth with a time of 2:01.75

In the 4x400m relay, East Carter’s group of Burchett, Napier, Sexton and Mackenzie Holbrook finished ninth with a time of 3:33.35.

“I’m very proud of my team, how they ran,” Napier told the independent. “I just felt like God was there with us. He blessed us.”

“Coach (Zach Musick) told us to push it,” Sexton said. “We practiced for it. We had to run against time, not people.”
