Running the Point

July 3, 2013 — I know I am kind of “new” to the town. Having been on the job as sports editor for the Journal-Times for almost seven months and going through the winter and spring sports seasons helped me create new relationships with our student-athletes and coaches within Carter County.

As the summer season is in full swing, I find myself wondering what these teams will bring to the history books of athletics at Carter County.

I want to share these stories and achievements our student-athletes achieve throughout their respective teams, as they deserve the coverage that football, soccer and basketball teams get during their campaigns.

Unfortunately for a one-man sports department covering four schools with multiple sports programs, I cannot make it to every event on the schedule as much as I would like.

So with that, I ask for assistance. When are meets? What records are set to be broken? Which events allow the most coverage on our student-athletes so that they might be recognized? The student-athletes of Carter County deserve to have their story told and I want to tell it, no matter how big or small.

I cannot be at everything. If they would clone me, maybe I could. If I am not told of an event that is going on, how can I be there?

I am here for the students and administration of our coverage area schools. I know it has been a “learn as you go, fly by the seat of your pants” transition for me but I am getting the hang of it.

So bear with me, folks. I am more than willing to listen and write a story that benefits everyone involved with athletics in Carter County. Whether it is getting schedules or stats for a team for a game write-up, I want to know what is going on and I think our subscribers do as well.
