Feb. 5, 2014 — Boys

1. Fleming County (15-6)

2. Ashland (15-5)

3. Rowan County (13-8)

4. Elliott County (14-7)

5. East Carter (10-9)

6. Boyd County (11-11)

7. Lewis County (11-10)

8. Morgan County (13-7)

It’s time to start calling East Carter a contender in the 16th Region. After three impressive games last week, including just a two-point loss to Fleming County and an upset of Ashland, the Raiders have made a statement to the rest of the Region saying that they belong in the talk for the title. They make the biggest jump in this week’s ranking to No. 5. Despite losses at the top, the top four teams remain the same. Ashland did bounce back with two wins against Bath County and Fairview. The Tomcats traveled to No. 4 Elliott County on Tuesday.

No. 1 Fleming County would go for its eighth straight victory over the No. 3 Rowan County Vikings on Tuesday night after the weather postponed the game on Monday.

Girls

1. East Carter (21-1)

2. Ashland (15-5)

3. Boyd County (14-7)

4. Lewis County (13-8)

5. Fleming County (11-10)

6. Bath County (13-8)

7. Russell (16-7)

8. Rowan County (10-10)

I don’t think anyone doubts who the two best teams in the Region are after Thursday’s 48-47 thriller between Ashland and East Carter. The No. 6 team in the state narrowly edged the Kittens in Grayson in front of what Hager Easterling called “The biggest crowd he’s seen in years.”

The two teams will square off again in Ashland on Feb. 20.

East is 13-0 in the Region and they would be challenged again facing No. 4 Lewis County tonight in Vanceburg. The Lady Lions have not lost a Region game since the Lady Raiders beat them in the EKC Tournament 48-43 back on Dec. 7.
