Ashland overpowers West Girls

Jan. 22, 2014 — With the loss of point guard Brooke Adkins for the season due to a knee injury, the West Carter girls basketball team is trying to make up for the loss of one of their key players. The Lady Comets returned home this past Friday night when they hosted the Ashland Kittens.

The Kittens jumped out to a big lead and never looked back as the defeated West Carter 60-33.

Combined with the double-digit turnovers West Carter had and the depleted bench with the absence of Adkins, the Lady Comets had a tough time trying to keep up with Ashland’s depth and athleticism.

Ashland jumped out to a 12-2 lead after the first quarter, limiting the Lady Comets to just one field goal. The Kittens would add to their lead in the second, outscoring West 23-9 to take a 35-11 lead going in to the break.

It did not get much better from there as the Lady Comets struggled to shoot the basketball throughout the contest.

The Kittens’ Alex Young led all scorers with 18 points. She was one of three Ashland players in double figures. Alexis Robinson scored 16 and Haley-Sue Foutch had 13 points in the victory. Shelby Gransberry had ten rebounds. As a team, the Kittens show 23-of-70 and 7-for-30 from beyond the arc.

The win gives the Kittens their fifth straight against the Lady Comets. West Carter has not beaten Ashland since the 2009-2010 season, a 54-46 victory on the road.

West seventh grader Morgan Berry led the Comets with 17 points. Lyla Evans scored seven points, Bonita Easterling came off the bench with five points while Madison Hanshaw and Hannah Bear each scored two points. As a team, West Carter had 12 field goals but was 7-for-14 from the free throw line.

The Lady Comets were to face Menifee County in the semifinals of the 16th Region All “A” Classic Tuesday but the snow pushed the games back a day. They will host the Lady Wildcats at 6 p.m. tonight in Olive Hill.
