Jan. 15, 2014 — Boys

1. Fleming County (10-5)

2. Ashland (10-3)

3. Elliott County (10-5)

4. Rowan County (9-7)

5. Boyd County (9-7)

6. Morgan County (8-4)

7. East Carter (7-6)

8. Raceland (6-5)

I do not think there is any doubt now as to who has the best team in the 16th Region heading in to 2014. The Fleming County Panthers have won all seven of their Region games this year and without Darion Burns who can come back after tearing his ACL over the summer next month. Whether he will or not remains to be seen. They earned a big win over Rowan County on Friday and have won 10 of 14 games on the season. They will be a handful as the last six weeks of the regular season take place.

Boyd County jumps over Morgan County after the Lions earned wins over Fairview and West Carter. East Carter has taken 11 days off between games, taking the John Calipari “Cal Camp” method in hopes of getting better on the practice floor.

Girls

1. East Carter (16-1)

2. Ashland (9-3)

3. Russell (13-3)

4. Bath County (9-3)

5. Boyd County (9-4)

6. Fleming County (9-5)

7. Lewis County (7-7)

8. Raceland (7-6)

The Associated Press high school rankings came out last week and East Carter comes in at as the ninth ranked team in the State. Although Friday’s 52-30 win over West Carter did not garner that ranking, Coach Hager Easterling knows the expectations of his team and cannot afford any slip ups heading in to the home stretch of the regular season. East travels to Fleming County on Thursday.

Russell earned three wins last week, garnering a hop over Bath County this week. The Lady Devils have won four straight since their embarrassing loss to the Lady Raiders in the Ohio River Classic a few weeks ago.
