Running the Point: Time to get serious

July 24, 2013 — The start of the high school sports season is officially underway as the Carter County Volleyball, Cross-Country, Boys and Girls Soccer and Football programs have begun preseason-practices. The “dead period” has come and gone and now the time to get conditioned, get minds right and learn schemes and plays to be successful in their respective seasons begins now.

This will be my first full season covering all four sports fulltime for The Journal-Times and words cannot express my excitement to finally get to see these programs in person. I cannot wait to see the consistency of the East and West Carter Boys soccer programs, the East-West football showdown and the West Carter Girls soccer team compete for another Regional Championship. Each of theses teams bring a certain factor to the table in the success rate of Carter County Athletics.

The programs will no doubt be working hard in the sun, rain, grass and mud to get to the games and meets all across the region to play for the ultimate goals of District, Regional and hopefully State Championships.

In the coming weeks, we will gather all of the information for the 2013 Fall Sports Spectacular to highlight each of these programs before the seasons begin. The hard work and dedication these teams bring to the table can only provide a positive outlook for the year. And I have also been doing some research for my inaugural football “Bates’ Crazy 8’s” that will debut on Aug. 19.

I look forward to developing more relationships with coaches in players like I have during Basketball, Baseball and Softball season. The student-athletes not only deserve coverage of their programs but also should be rewarded for their efforts on the field. Being able to tell their stories of how they won a game or a personal performance worth telling is what makes this opportunity perfect for me.

What will the season hold for these programs? What ups and downs will they go through? Will it bring teams closer? Drift apart? It is not up to me but to the members of each programs to play as hard as they can, as smart as they can, and play as a team to accomplish their goals for the year.
