Bates' Crazy 8

March 20, 2013 — Time to break out the bats, tighten up the spikes and toe the rubber.

It’s baseball and softball season and with that my inaugural rankings for the 16th Region. Now keep in mind, these could be and most likely will be wrong but there is plenty of season to be played and of course rankings change from week to week.

1. Ashland

2. Boyd County

3. Lewis County

4. Greenup County

5. Fleming County

6. East Carter

7. Russell

8. Rowan County

The Tomcats look to be one of the favorites heading into baseball season. With the returning hurler Logan Salow, pitching will definitely be one of their strongest points. Boyd County, despite their 20-21 record last year, is expected to rebound nicely. But watch out for teams like Greenup, Lewis and East Carter as they have a lot of tools to put together a nice run throughout the year.

1. Ashland

2. Boyd County

3. East Carter

4. Russell

5. Fleming County

6. Rowan County

7. Greenup County

8. Raceland

It’s a sweep for Ashland in the first rankings. Since both represented the 16th Region at their respective state tournaments, they have to start at the top, right? But for softball, this could be one of the most competitive years the 16th has seen in recent memory. With so much balance, it will be a war just to get out of the district, let alone the region!

So, good luck to everyone this season. If your team is not in the rankings or they are not where you think they should be, I’ll be more than happy to admit when I’m wrong which is about 90 percent of the time.
