East Cross Country Team earns grant

Journal-Times

April 23, 2014 — East Carter High School received a grant for their Cross Country team, thanks to the California Casualty Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grant initiative. They are among 79 high schools in 31 states receiving a total of $101,000 this year for struggling athletic departments.

The Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grant program was created to offset budget cuts forcing high schools to decrease, eliminate or implement participation fees for their sports programs – leaving some kids sitting on the sidelines. California Casualty Chairman Emeritus Thomas R. Brown, an avid sportsman, recognized the positive benefits of teamwork and physical endeavors. Since its inception, more than $300,000 has been awarded to hundreds of public high schools across the nation.

As funding for schools decreases, so does the amount for athletics. At East Carter High School, Coach Merry Berry says athletics are very important for their students, but funding cuts have eliminated teams that aren’t self-sustained through admission fees. With support from California Casualty, the cross country team will now be able to provide new uniforms to the student-athletes, keeping the program viable.

“California Casualty understands the important role athletics play in the education of our youth,” said Doug Goldberg, Senior Vice President. “We have partnered with education associations for more than 60 years and we are honored to give back to them.”

California Casualty is proud to provide the Kentucky Education Association’s NEA® Auto and Home Insurance Program since 1994.
