Dec. 26, 2012 —
The East Carter Lady Raiders may have fallen short of its goal of a regional repeat in 2012, but there was nothing to hang their head about.
In the Lady Raiders first season within the new 16th Region of soccer, they once again dominated the local competition, ending up with a record of 17-2-1 to finish first in the 16th Region girls’ standings.
Head Coach Ben Fritz and his team’s efforts were recognized last Tuesday when the Ashland Daily Independent named its annual honorees for the best players in the area.
The All-Area team is a collection of the area’s best players as voted on by coaches of local teams who they feel gave the best performances of the year.
The Lady Raiders found All-Area members in its junior class, with junior forward Taylor Burnett, junior midfielder Taylor Burnett and junior goalie Starr Caldwell representing Raider blue.
Dyer finished her junior season with 25 goals and six assists, while Burnett racked up 18 goals and five assists, and Caldwell played restrictor, allowing only 10 goals at keeper.
East Carter suffered its second loss, in the regional finals, taking a heartbreaking defeated to Ashland, 2-1, following a shootout.
While West Carter did not put together the strongest of seasons, it was still its best to date at 8-13-1.
For the Lady Comets, senior forward Amber Buckley was a lone ranger of sorts for her team on the offensive end.
Buckley’s staggering 38 points grabbed the attention of coaches in the area, making her West Carter’s lone pick for the All-Area squad.
The Lady Raiders also saw three of its girls claim honorable mention for the respected team, with senior midfielder Lexie Cline and junior defensive player Amber Hall both making the list.
Coach of the Year honors were split between Ashland’s E.B. Lowman and Lawrence County’s Brett Jenks.
Ashland midfielder Charity Collins took home Player of the Year honors, tallying a region-high 32 goals, along with eight assists.
