Feb. 26, 2014 — East Carter senior Bryana Greenhill scored 16 points and forced seven steals as the No. 8 Lady Raiders secured their spot in the 16th Region Tournament, defeating Morgan County 62-29 Monday night in West Liberty.
The Lady Raiders (28-2) overcame poor shooting in the first half and 20 turnovers to advance to their sixth straight 62nd District Championship game. East shot 7-for-20 in the first half, opposed to the 12-for-21 in the second half.
“That is way too many against the zone Morgan County was playing,” Lady Raiders coach Hager Easterling said. “They weren’t pressuring us and playing the passing lanes, it was just our impatience at times.
“We were trying to thread the ball in between two people and we weren’t ready to drive to the basket.”
Easterling was not sure whether it was nerves or possibly looking past the Lady Cougars but he felt like his team didn’t play well.
“I don’t care what the situation is, this first postseason game is hard to play,” Easterling said. “It’s jitters and you get them out and as we move on, we’ll settle in and get ready to play.”
Despite a 13-point lead midway through the second quarter, Greenhill would take over, scoring eight straight points to give East Carter the boost they would need to extend the lead and get things under control.
“Bryana has done that for us night in and night out,” Easterling said. “She’s stepped up like a senior does. She hasn’t really got a lot of credit for the player she is but we appreciate her.
“She wanted the ball. She wanted to make plays and help her team win.”
Kristen Mayo would see limited action on the floor, picking up two fouls midway through the second quarter and two more late in the third quarter.
