Bates' Crazy 8

Feb. 19, 2014 — Boys

1. Fleming County (18-8)

2. Rowan County (18-9)

3. Ashland (17-8)

4. Boyd County (15-13)

5. Lewis County (14-12)

6. East Carter (12-12)

7. Elliott County (16-8)

8. Raceland (14-10)

The 61st District reigns supreme.

Fleming County and Rowan County are in the top two spots this week after the Vikings earned a signature road win over the Ashland Tomcats, who drop one spot to third. Unfortunately, there is not a whole lot to report as the weather just continues to hold the regular season hostage with an abundance of postponed games.

Luckily, there is a light at the end of the tunnel with this being the last week of the regular season. District tournaments begin next week and we know some of the pairings already.

In the 61st, Fleming County will take on Menifee County next Tuesday while Rowan will battle Bath County after that. In the 63rd, Lewis will take on Russell on the same night while Raceland plays Greenup County on the Wednesday night.

As I was writing this, I noticed there are two teams from each district in this week’s Crazy 8. Could those be the teams that make up the 16th Region tournament?

1. Ashland (19-6)

2. East Carter (24-2)

3. Boyd County (18-8)

4. Lewis County (16-10)

5. Fleming County (15-10)

6. Russell (18-9)

7. Bath County (13-8)

8. Rowan County (11-12)

No big surprises here this week on the girls rankings. We won’t know for sure until the district tournament but seven of these eight teams I believe will be in the Region tournament. With three teams from the 61st in the top eight, one of them will be going home early and to be honest, it could be any three of them.

After watching Fleming and Rowan go into double overtime, could it be these two teams? The Lady Panthers also knocked off Bath County last week as well. Rowan will face Bath next Monday in the 61st District Tournament.

This week features exciting games if the weather cooperates. East Carter takes on Ashland in a rematch from a few weeks ago. The Lady Raiders held on to defeat the Kittens 48-47 in a thriller in Grayson. Rowan travels to Boyd County on Friday. From there, the teams will draw up their final game plans heading into the postseason.
