West Carter holds Maroon and White night

Nov. 20, 2013 — West Carter fans caught a glimpse of what the Comets will be like this season as they packed the Harold Holbrook Athletic Complex Thursday night in the annual Maroon and White game.

There were spotlights and fog machines announcing each member of the boys and girls basketball teams to roaring applause, dunks and long range jumpers that gave cheers to every player.

“We told them to go out and have fun,” West girls coach Bart Stevens said. “We’ll get down to business soon enough and we’ll make some adjustments when we need to.”

Of course there will be plenty of things to work on before the season begins.

“We’re not exactly where we want to be but I saw flashes in the pan of what we’re capable of being this season,” Stevens said.

“We’ve always got those first game jitters and we have some young guys that were out there playing so I’m sure they were nervous but this was all about having fun,” Webb said.

Both teams held intersquad scrimmages throughout the night. Coach Stevens saw plenty of good things with his girls.

“I liked a lot of things that I saw,” Stevens said. “Our nine or 10 kids played very well. The girls that I expected to come and be sharp were just that. We’re in pretty good shape before the season starts.”

This was also a chance for their coaches to see how his team reacts during game time situations.

“It’s good to have our kids out there and competing and as coaches, we want to see what we’ve been working on both offensively and defensively and work some of those kinks out,” Webb said.

“We’re not afraid to put it up,” Stevens said. “We have 15 kids who want to be All-Americans. I’m happy about that though. Last year we had times where our kids didn’t want to shoot the ball. I knew we would be offensive minded. But we have to work on some things defensively before the season starts.”
