West falls to Morgan County in All “A” Championship

Jan. 29, 2014 — West Carter’s girls basketball team was playing in their third All “A” Championship game in the past four seasons at home on Friday night, facing a familiar team in 62nd District Morgan County. The winner would represent the 16th Region in the state tournament in Frankfort this week.

The Lady Cougars used a solid defensive game plan to win their first ever All “A” Championship game 38-34 and dethrone the Lady Comets.

“Morgan County is going through the same thing as we are,” Stevens said. “They have gone through rough times like us but we just came out flat and with how we played Thursday, I was kind of surprised about that.”

After rallying from 12 points down in the semifinal against Menifee County, the Lady Comets (6-10) had the lead in the fourth quarter but missed six free throws in the final minute and had trouble closing out the game.

“We missed two front ends of the bonus and they started fouling us with small lead,” Stevens said. “We had some really bad turnovers and unforced errors. We didn’t play with the intensity that we needed to have to win.”

Seventh grader Morgan Berry, who had 29 points in the semifinal was held to just ten points.

“They held her in check,” Stevens said. “She got in foul trouble in the first half and sat the entire second quarter. She’s young and plays a lot on emotion and when things don’t go well, they lose their confidence. They were doing a good job they kept her from doing things and we needed her to do.”

West Carter shot 14-of-36 from the field, but was just 4-for-15 from the three-point line. They were only 2-for-9 from the free throw line. Lexie Berry had eight points for West Carter.

This was a flip of the game the two teams that played back on Jan. 14 when the Lady Comets defeated the Lady Cougars 48-29.
