Jan. 29, 2014 — Boys

1. Fleming County (14-6)

2. Ashland (13-4)

3. Rowan County (12-7)

4. Elliott County (14-6)

5. Boyd County (10-9)

6. Morgan County (11-6)

7. Lewis County (9-9)

8. East Carter (8-9)

At this point, can anyone stop Fleming County? Believe it or not, they are just as good even without the services of senior guard Darion Burns, who suffered a knee injury over the summer. They are 11-0 in the 16th Region, and Ashland is the only other undefeated 16th Region team with a 7-0 record. We only have to wait nine more days until those two teams square off in Flemingsburg.

The weather canceled an abundance of great games that were to take place last week and I fear that could be the case this week with the cold air returning. Luckily, the 16th Region All “A” Classic was decided after two great boys games. Raceland would defeat West Carter on a last second heave by Jacob Blair in overtime to put the Rams in the title game. Elliott County would go on to win the Championship by eight to represent the 16th in Frankfort.

1. East Carter (19-1)

2. Ashland (12-4)

3. Bath County (12-4)

4. Boyd County (12-6)

5. Lewis County (11-7)

6. Fleming County (9-10)

7. Rowan County (9-9)

8. Russell (13-7)

The Lady Raiders have held on to the top spot of the girls rankings since the start of the season. After a cancellation due to weather, we finally get to see the matchup of No. 1 vs. No. 2 as East will host Ashland in a makeup game Thursday night in Grayson.

Don’t look now, but here come the Lady Lions of Lewis County. They have won seven out of their last nine games and with a favorable schedule heading in to February, Jay Fite’s ball club could go in to the postseason as one of the hottest teams in the Region. They have games against Rowan, East Carter, Bath County and Boyd County in their final nine contests.
